China reported the biggest daily increase in cases of the novel coronavirus in several months, as infections have surged in several of its provinces in recent weeks, while cases outside mainland China have declined.
At 6,660 new cases across the country on Jan. 24, the biggest single-day rise since March 7, the National Health Commission said on Monday.
Based on the latest data, the country recorded 5,668 infections on Jan. 25, the most since April 20, and 11,900 additional cases on Jan. 27.
Infections outside China have declined slightly, falling to lower than numbers seen a month ago, but not enough for severe intervention, said Chen Tong, China head of the International Medical Entanglement NGO.
The total number of active cases around the world reached 233,999 as of Sunday, a four-week low. Over that period, the highest global death toll from the coronavirus was China, with 1,862 deaths.
