Okavango-Kalahari Safari

Explore the different ecosystems of northern Botswana from the comfort of your vehicle, boat and on foot, bringing you an unparalleled bush experience. Enjoy the magnificent Okavango Delta with its many waterways and rich diversity of bird and animal life, and the solitude of the wide open spaces of the Kalahari. Sample Itinerary
Day 1 Maun – Khwai area               Arrive at the Maun Airport where you will be welcomed by your guides. After a short break we will travel in safari vehicles to the Khwai area, just to the east of the Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai area is well known for its elephant and leopard populations and is an excellent area for bush walks. (D)
Days 2 & 3 Khwai areaSetting out in the morning, we will go on a bushwalk for about 4 hours in the nearby area. There will be time for snacks and breaks during the walk. Once we arrive back at camp, a healthy brunch will await us. After a good rest, we will continue with an afternoon walk in the vicinity of the camp.In the early evening of the first day we will embark on a night drive. This may give us the opportunity to observe some of the nocturnal animals like predators, usually not seen during the day. The last day in the Khwai area will be completed with a sundowner at the Khwai River, to absorb the tranquil atmosphere of an African sunset. (BLD)
Day 4 Khwai area – Moremi G.R. Transferring to the Moremi Game Reserve where a bush camp awaits us. The remainder of the day will be spent on a game drive, exploring this beautiful area with its woodlands, floodplains and waterways. (BLD)
Day 5 Moremi Game Reserve, Xakanaxa LagoonAn early morning game drive in the reserve will ensure the best time of the day will be spent observing animals. Large animals that may be encountered include elephant, buffalo, lion, spotted hyena, cheetah and many antelope species. The afternoon will be spent exploring the Xakanaxa lagoon and the many waterways of the Okavango Delta by boat. This magnificent wetland is rich in bird life, hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife. Day 6   Moremi G.R. – MaunAfter breakfast we will fly back to Maun. Guests that do not participate in the post-extension tour, will depart from the Maun Airport on their flight back to Johannesburg, South Africa. (B)

Day 7 Makgadikgadi Pans – Central Kalahari G.R.After a morning game drive in the surrounding area we will drive to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in the heart of the Kalahari Desert. (BLD)
Days 8 & 9 Central Kalahari Game ReserveThe next two days will be spent in this arid savanna ecosystem, dominated by camelthorn trees. On the game drives in this huge reserve, we may encounter desert adapted antelopes such as springbok and oryx. Other wildlife species such as blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, lion, jackal, ostrich also reside here. (BLD)
Day 10 Central Kalahari G.R – MaunAfter a short early morning game drive we will travel back to Maun where we will stay at the Island Safari Lodge. This will give us time to relax and reflect on the African adventure before heading home the next day. (BLD)
Day 11  Depart from MaunAfter breakfast guests will be transported to the Maun Airport to depart for Johannesburg, South Africa. (B)

Sample Itinerary
Day 1 WindhoekYou will be met by your tour guide at the airport and transferred to a comfortable guest house in Windhoek. Dinner will be at own expense.
Day 2 Windhoek – SossusvleiWe will drive in a south-westerly direction traversing the Khomas Hochland before descending down the escarpment along impressive mountain passes. There is a good chance of seeing some wildlife along the way. As we reach the bottom of the escarpment the spectacular desert landscape unfolds before us. We continue to Sesriem at the edge of the Namib Desert where we stay for two nights. A short visit to the Elim’s Dune will give us an opportunity to stretch our legs and is an excellent opportunity to witness the changing colours of the red dunes at sunset. (BLD)
Day 3 SossusvleiWe will leave early, driving into the desert to the majestic and renowned Sossusvlei dunes. Breakfast will be served near the dunes. Exploring the dunes and pans on foot will give you an insight into desert ecology.  Ancient mineral pans surrounded by huge red sand dunes, stunted camelthorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or an ostrich provide endless photographic opportunities. We will return to camp around lunchtime. As the day cools off in the late afternoon we will take a short excursion to the nearby Sesriem Canyon. (BLD)
Day 4 Sossusvlei – SwakopmundTraversing the endless gravel plains of the Namib Desert and the Kuiseb Canyon brings us to the Atlantic Coast. We will stop for a picnic lunch at the lagoon in the port city of Walvis Bay.  There is a good chance of seeing flamingos, sea gulls and other sea birds. A short drive along the coast brings us to the quaint town of Swakopmund where we will stay for two nights. Dinner will be at own expense. (BL)
Day 5   SwakopmundThe day gives you an opportunity to participate in the many optional activities on offer. These are at your own expense. Examples of activities are scenic flights, boat trips, dune riding with ATVs, fishing, horse riding and more. Your tour guide will discuss all the possible options with you to enable advance bookings before arriving in Swakopmund. All optional activities and excursions are subject to availability and are made at the client’s own expense and risk. A very good museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium provide further options. Swakopmund, with its colonial German architecture and culture also offers quality restaurants, coffee-bars, bakeries, gift shops, book shops and supermarkets. All meals today will be at your own expense.
Day 6 Swakopmund – TwyfelfonteinDeparting after breakfast, we will head north along the coast to Henties Bay. From here we turn inland and traverse the gravel plains of the northern Namib Desert towards the picturesque landscape of Damaraland. Passing Brandberg, the highest mountain in Namibia we travel to Twyfelfontein in the heart of Damaraland. (BLD)
Day 7 Twyfelfontein – Oase Himba VillageWe will visit nearby Twyfelfontein, a national monument famous for its many rock engravings, in the early morning. A local guide will show us around this ancient open-air ‘art gallery’.  Thereafter we will drive east towards Khorixas, the capital of Damaraland. Along the way we will visit the Petrified Forest, a natural collection of petrified trunks, millions of years old. We will arrive at the Oase Himba Village where a Himba community still follows a traditional pastoral lifestyle. During the afternoon we will be invited into the Himba village to meet with the villagers. A specialist guide/translator will introduce us to the traditional lifestyle to learn more about their food, marriage customs, the “Holy Fire” and other customs. (BLD)
Day 8 Oase Himba Village – Okaukuejo, Etosha N.P.Leaving in the morning we will arrive for a late lunch in the Okaukuejo Camp where we will stay for two nights. The afternoon offers time to relax at the nearby waterhole which is visited by many wildlife and bird species. The floodlit waterhole offers a good chance to see lion, elephants and black rhino, particularly in the evening. (BLD)
Day 9  Okaukuejo Camp, Etosha N.P.Much of the day will be spent game viewing in the surrounding area on the morning and afternoon game drives. You may also choose to relax in camp and sitting at the viewing area close to the waterhole is an excellent opportunity to relax and to soak up the bush atmosphere as hundreds of animals and birds come to drink. Day 10 Etosha N.P. – WindhoekAfter a short game drive we will leave Etosha and travel south towards Windhoek passing through some small towns along the way. You will be dropped-off at the airport for your return flight. (B)

Day 1 Arrive in Cape TownTwo nights will be spent in this beautiful city with the magnificent Table Mountain as a backdrop. Accommodation is reserved at the Commodore Hotel at the scenic Waterfront area. (D)
Day 2 Cape TownDepending on local weather conditions, we will take a boat ride to Robben Island in the morning. The island was home to Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned there for many years. Besides the prison which is now a museum, the island is also home to a colony of African penguins. Depending on local weather conditions, the afternoon will be spent on Table Mountain. A short ride by a revolving cable car brings you to the summit of Table Mountain from where you have a magnificent view over Table Bay and the city. (BLD)
Day 3 Cape Town – HermanusA two hour drive to Hermanus brings us to a unique part of the southern coast. The afternoon will be spent at leisure exploring the coastline. Overnight accommodation will be at the Whale Rock Lodge. (BLD)
Day 4 HermanusWe will go out to sea for 4 to 5 hours to watch sharks near one of the rocky islands. For the adventurous there is an option at your own expense to dive and see the sharks under water. The remainder of the day will be spent at leisure exploring the coastline and towns. (BLD)
Day 5   Garden RouteWe will continue to drive east along the Garden Route and en route will visit the Bontebok National Park, well-known for its rare, striking bontebok antelope. We will continue until we reach Knysna, a beautiful town along the Knysna Lagoon, where we will overnight in the Knysna Hollow. (BLD)
Day 6 Garden RouteContinuing along the Garden Route, we will cross the Bloukraanz Bridge, one of the highest bungee jumping platforms in the world. A visit to the Tsitsikamma National Park, which is well-known for its steep cliffs, forests, deep gorges and rocky shores will be a welcome stop-over. The day’s journey will end at the Addo National Park, where we will stay in the Zuurberg Mountain Inn. (BLD)
Day 7 Addo National ParkThe day will be spent on game drives in the Addo National Park, famous for its elephants. The park also boasts African buffalo, black rhino, baboons and many antelope species. (BLD)
Day 8 Addo N.P. – Oudtshoorn, KarooLeaving the Eastern Cape behind, we travel west to have lunch in JeffreysBay. From here we traverse the Langkloof, a famous apple producing area towards Oudtshoorn, the capital of the Klein Karoo. Overnight accommodation will be in the La Plume Guest House. (BLD)
Day 9 Oudtshoorn, KarooWe will visit the Cango Caves, well known for their magnificent speleothems (stalactites and stalgmites) in the morning. The Klein Karoo is famous for its ostrich farms, one of which will be visited after lunch. This will give you the opportunity to learn more about these unusual birds and their commercial use. (BLD)
Day 10 Garden Route, Cape TownTraversing the Outeniqua Mountains, we will return to the Garden Route and head west through rolling wheat fields back to Cape Town. Accommodation will be in the Commodore Hotel, at the Waterfront district. (BLD)
Day 11 Cape Town, DepartureIn the morning a wine tour has been arranged near the famous town of Stellenbosch. This is a renowned wine producing area and boasts many export vintages. We will then be taken to the airport in time for the flight back to the USA. (B)
